I'am thinking of going to adsl broadband soon and was wondering what
the plusnet newsgroup service is like in general. In the past i have
read things about them having trouble with news servers but what are
they like today?, as i do use newsgroups quite a lot now.

Thanks in advance

du.

Today not to bad, yesterday they had problems & as for tomorrow, the crystal
ball isn't working I'm afraid. All ISP's have problems it how they deal
with the fact that they have a problem & what they do afterwards which is
important & Plusnet were & are very reactive, unlike some.

I could mention the name of an ISP which had problems for over 3 years
without bothering to do anything about it, they even went as far as telling
customers that it was a freeby & they had no grounds to complain, but I
won't I just finally got fed up & left

I joined PlusNet in August from BT and their news server was part of the
attraction. It was good when I joined but it has gone seriously down hill
and has regular problems such as messages expiring after only a few minutes
or headers being available but the message is empty inside.
If you're into newsgroups then an account with a specialist news server
provider is needed rather than just relying on the news service from your
ISP.
When PlusNet news became unreliable I signed up with Newshosting for a 6
month unrestricted account which works very well. It cost $83, but it has
about 21 days retention for binaries and excellent completion. I only need
to download a couple of ISOs and the 6 month fee is more than covered.

PIPEX now offers Giganews to ADSL subscribers. You get 10GB of free
bandwidth each month, anything more than that and you have to pay. I've
been using it and it seems fine.
