Just for info for anyone already in the process of migrating from
PlusNet to Metronet...

After I'd already setup alternate means of collecting email, it turns
out that Plusnet are keeping open the account details of users
migrating out to Metronet. This will obviously make it easier to
migrate them back in.

They just flag your account as a zero cost PAYG account.

Yes, I migrated to UK Online in May. My PlusNet address is still active.

I thought they did that with everybody who leaves them - they did for
me, albeit on a dial up account.

The reason given is, or was, that it enables you to log into the portal
and use the contact-us system if you have problems with the migration.

Yes, same with me, came in very handy last week when my new ISP had a
major failure.

The more cynical might suggest they can use it to
a) massage their customer figures
b) spam former customers w/o breaching data protection rules

Does anyone know the words to hotel california :-?

Back in late 2003 I left Plusnet ISDN to go with Demon, and the
account is still on PAYG now. Also, my IP address still seems to have
my custom RDNS tag on it .

Hi,

This is normal practise unless a customer specifically asks for the
account to be completely killed off so that they can still receive any
email sent to their account or use Contact Us. If they don't use the
account is automatically closed after 3 months.

With Regards,

Dave,

This is not true, when I migrated out of Plusnet my account was killed the
day I joined my new ISP and I never asked for the account to be killed off.

I left Demon for Plusnet earlier this year and my Demon email is still
working, although all this really means is that I'm clearing out the steady
flow of spam so really I'm doing them a favour. Demon say they reserve your
subdomain for a year so maybe that's why it still works, also my old
website is still up though I haven't tried logging into it to alter
anything for fear they start charging me again.

Soon I'll have two dead accounts to get mail from since I'm leaving Plusnet
but I can't decide whether to go right now or defer it a few weeks to
minimise the money I lose. My head says, save £15 by giving notice next
week and migrating in the new year, but my heart says, go go go! Does it
really take 7 days to get a MAC code?
