I use Plusnet ADSL, and their email service is the absolute pits.
Email is delayed for hours, and in some cases, users in the internal
groups are reporting delays of several days!!

There news service is also still broken despite them stating it's fixed

Subsequently, I am likely going to use an alternative news feed from now
on (although I don't place much emphasis on news) but now need a
reliable email only provider that I can run in tandem with my ADSL
connection to Plusnet; something I don't need to dial into every so
often to keep 'alive'

Recommendations?

for £2 a month you can get 20 email accounts one with virus scanner from
http://oneandone.co.uk/xml/init?k_id=3695327
and they all have 50mg each account and can handle 14mb files before having
to be split, also has basic web hosting thrown in

That's POP3 only though, I require full POP3 *and* SMTP in order to
avoid having to use the dreadful service Plusnet provide completely.

This thread is actually quite interesting. I'm going with Plusnet in 33
days, and was considering stopping my 30 quid a year subscription to my
web hosting company.

Reading it, I think I'll stick for a while :-)

FWIW, I'm with Architec (http://www.architec.co.uk). 30 quid a year gets
me 200Mb of web space, shedload of POP boxes (something like 100) and
1.5Gb bandwidth a month (I'm using about 20 ATM :-).

They have SMTP as well. So long as the IP you're on has checked for mail
in the last 20 minutes, you can send email too.

I've been with them (through other people, and myself) for about 5 years,
and we only had trouble with them earlier this year, because they had to
physically move servers, and they were down for a couple of days rather
than hours, but apart from that, no problems at all.

HTH

I'm soon to get broadband, plusnet were recommended on this forum as
one 'to look at'.

The normally come out quite good in http://www.adslguide.org.uk and
compare quite favourably in customer service.

How long have you been with them, might it be that you are just a bit
'unlucky'.

I've been with Plusnet for over a year, but on ADSL for a tad less.
Their ADSL connectivity is pretty good, I truly can't complain about
that.

But their email performance sucks big time, and it seems to be an
ongoing thing with Plusnet. No email (AFAIU) gets lost, but there are
sometimes huge delays 'somewhere' in the Plusnet system.

There are regular 'complaints' within their internal newsgroups of
delayed email.

Their news service is acceptable, but again, there are often long delays
between posting and appearing. I don't have much reliance on news, so I
can live with it to a point.

Customer service can't really be faulted, although they do seem to have
a reputation for replying with 'stock' replies, and sometimes their
responses can make one feel like raising an eyebrow or two.

I complained bitterly once about 'something' which I felt strongly
about, and was emailed privately by a Plusnet employee to tell me to
stop "trolling" ... so I have a reserved opinion on their customer
service, although in fairness, I don't recall the last time I needed to
use it. Overall, I think it's pretty good.

I would say join Plusnet for your connectivity, but use a 3rd party for
your email if you have any cause to rely on it.

And lastly ... watch their billing department. They also have a pretty
poor record by all accounts, although I don't have a personal experience
of this.

I'd end up keeping my present POP addresses anyway so it may not be a
major factor.

Tahnks for the comments though.

Architec! 30 quid a year. POP. SMTP. Webspace. Good service. Simple as
that.

Do they have virus checking and spam traps on the mailboxes?
Do they let you send from addresses other than you own domain. NO I am not
a spammer! - I just want to send e-mails from home as if from my work
address (Plusnet permit this)?

Chris
