Plusnet has unveiled the details of a new bundled phone and broadband
product that attempts to match the cut-price offer recently announced by
the Carphone Warehouse.

There will be a lot of unhappy customers when they get there download bill
as trying to budget to such small limits will be impossible.

For very light users - under 2-3G, it may well save money.

It's hardly for everyone, but why should every broadband product suit
everyone?

Especially Windows users receiving all those automatic software updates
and anti-virus signature updates.

Light users may like it for email and surfing, but surely a connection can
use up 50mb a month just while idle?

Generally.
But, many users do use under 1G a month.
Unfortunately, the general spam from the net (port probes et al) may
exceed that.
I'd quite like (for some people I know) a 100% quiet connection, with
just proxies on the other end.

I've used 50MB today alone, just surfing, email, and transfering two jpegs
to my server.

My router can clock almost that in under a week, without any PC's
actually on.

It's unrealistically low, unless PN are going to rethink how they
measure usage, if they decide to only count actually usage but not all
the port probes, pings etc which do happen then maybe, just maybe it
may just work, but they aren't so it won't. It's just another one of
their half baked ideas which are doomed to failure, unless it's a
crafty ploy to get people hooked into broadband so much so they have
to upgrade their account to suite their usage (well the usage which PN
claim they are doing).....

Our house has three PCs, mine and one each in our teenage lads' rooms.
Our monthly total rarely exceeds 2GB

When 'idle', my connection consumes 300-500k over a 24 hr period

Most low users I know switch off their modem/router when the PC is
switched off (i.e. >95% of the time)
