Hi,

Received my Plusnet equipment today and my line is active. One major problem
thought...when i placed my order I asked if I could use my existing wireless
router which I had used with NTL and I was told that this would not be a
problem.

Well guess what? The Binatone 500 crap they have sent me does not support
this, so I cannot get the internet connection to my 2 other PC's without
having 1 switched on all the time!!

The rep I spoke to on the phone sounded like a student and was twisting my
words and saying that it can be used but I will have to keep a PC switched
on all the time.

I said this was not good enough as I was deffo told that it would work. He
said that i could use there routher but I would have to pay an extra £77 to
get it and he didn't mention it being wireless!!!

I told him that I have folked out a lot of money for my wireless equipment
and there is no way I am replacing it so I would like to cancel my account
and he said I could but i would not be refunded my £127 i paid to join!!! He
said i may get back the cost of the modem about £44.

So as you may guess I hung up the phone as I was about to explode...I knew
this offer was too good to be true!!

Any ideas anyone...and don't tell me to buy any new equipment as it has just
cost me £127 to join the bloody service. I choose not to have a 12 month
contract.

Plusnet works fine with wireless. My partner uses a DrayTek wireless router
and has the laptop, his xbox, my xbox and a audiotron hooked up no problem.

Erm, please do tell, what exactly DOES a student sound like? Rather
brighter and eloquent than you, if the lot here at my uni are anything
to go by.

like the idiot students i used to work with at a big call centre in
Manchester. I know how these call centres work and I know that the person i
was talking too was there to make a few extra pounds and was not interested
in my call at all.

So you figure that a ADSL USB Modem will work with wireless Ethernet Router?

Well that makes sense, USB won`t connect with Ethernet now will it!!

Did you not do your homework and lookup the make of modem they were
offering??

It`s obvious you need an ADSL Ethernet modem.

You have misread it...the first man I spoke too sounded like he knew what he
was talking about but the lad I spoke to today didn't seem interested at
all.

Well, without getting into who said what to whom when, it seems that you
have come up against a fairly common problem of not understanding the
difference between a broadband router and an ADSL router. An ADSL router has
an ADSL modem built in, and works on an ADSL-enabled telephone line. A BB
router doesn't have a modem, and works on a cable-based broadband service.
AIUI, to make this work in the way you wish, you would need - at very
least - an ADSL modem with an ethernet (as opposed to USB) output - which
you could plug into your existing wireless router.

I assume that your wireless router enables your computers to talk to each
other independently of the internet connection? If so, you *could* use the
Binatone ADSL500 Modem (which, incidentally, Argos sell for 30 quid!) in one
computer, and use ICS - or router software such as WinRoute - to share the
connection. This would, of course, mean that the computer with the modem
would have to be switched on before any others could access the internet -
which isn't really what you want - but might be the best short term
solution.

I doubt whether PlusNet intentionally misled you - it's a common
misunderstanding. If you want an ADSL connection, you will have the same
issue with *any* ISP - so cancelling won't get you very far!

1. Calm down.
2. Accept the extremely generous offer of a £44 pound refund on the
ADSL500 modem - they are only £29.99 at Argos.
3. Buy a suitable ADSL modem with an Ethernet connection - for probably
very little more than the £44 you got back.
4. Set it up, enjoy your ADSL connection, live happily ever after [and
do not in future expect non-technical sales staff to advise on
details of customers' individual LAN setups].
