It is a bit curious. The speed before was a very old 1mbps line service. I
know that's low but I wasn't too bothered about upgrading. This is a forced
upgrade for no extra cost. I had done a speed test before. Now it's about
5 but the info email said it could be upto 24.
I have put the router through a power cycle.
Thanks for all your comments, much appreciated.
I might write to them.

The 'upto 24(Mbps)' is purely theoretical and no-one outside of the
exchange is will get that speed.

The BT broadband checker
http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/adslchecker.welcome can give you some
predictions regarding expected speed. For me it's pretty much spot on,
but others have found it to be less accurate.

Don't do it too often, as the exchange may 'think' there's a problem and
reduce the speed to compensate. Just leave it on all the time.

I'd ring them. I found them very responsive on the phone and things
we're sorted out much more quickly when you actually spoke to someone.

Email works. I had logged a call. They said don't worry about it and that
as I could still connect I shouldn't worry my pretty little head about it.
But I persisted and posted to them the comments from this group. Last night
the red light became a flashing green light. So I think success in getting
them to take it seriously. The answer of course was persistence.
Thanks to all for your help.
