The 'upto 24(Mbps)' is purely theoretical and no-one outside of the
exchange is will get that speed.
The BT broadband checker
http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/adslchecker.welcome can give you some
predictions regarding expected speed. For me it's pretty much spot on,
but others have found it to be less accurate.

Don't do it too often, as the exchange may 'think' there's a problem and
reduce the speed to compensate. Just leave it on all the time.

I'd ring them. I found them very responsive on the phone and things
we're sorted out much more quickly when you actually spoke to someone.
