PlusNet & Fixed IP Query.

I've just signed up with PlusNet and have noticed that I have been given a
fixed IP address.
I thought this was an option as I would prefer a dynamically assigned IP
address.
Calling PlusNet tech support, I was told that there is no way to change this
as all their ADSL accounts are given fixed IP addresses however, I can
change my fixed IP address to a new fixed IP address now and then.
I just need somebody to confirm if this is actually the case or can I have
an dynamic IP address.

Thanks.

AFAIK this is the case.

and it's a feature of some accounts, charged extra on some other accounts,
and not an option (at present) for PlusNet users. But perhaps someone at
PlusNet will make this aspect clearer on their website so it is shown for
all prospective customers to know in advance of signup. Personally, I
am happy to also have a dynamic IP address. Peter M.

Of course many ISP's use long leases. Coupled with infrequent re-boots this
can mean keeping the same IP address semi-permantly even when it's sold as
dynamic.

I know someone with Pipex who has had the same "dynamic" IP address for
months.

Really? adslguide indicates Plus.Net offers multiple static IP addresses
on an account. Is this incorrect?

Hi,

Yes, as is the "always-on" nature of ADSL even with a dynamic IP you're
likely to have the same address for a while. I'm curious as to why a
dynamic IP is preferred, we would still recommend you take exactly the same
security precautions whether using a dynamic or static address.

Kind Regards,
Rob

They offer 4 IPs initially if you ask, but from plus net's previous
postings here wont provision anymore for a home user without being told
*explicitly* why the user needs them.

Say you hammer an FTP server and get banned.
Say you get G/K-lined from IRC..
Say you want to be able to send e-mails and not have the person be able
to whois your IP with the RIPE database and find out your *exact* name!
(admittedly this is only with 4 or more IPs)

...those were just a few reasons I could think of.

Can you give any *legitimate* reasons?

Any of the three above would likely put you in breach of your ISP's AUP
anyway. If that's the sort of customer you were I'd want to make damn
sure you *were* on a static IP!
