Got the message below using usenet on plusnet.

Very light usage IMO (50 newsgroup msgs per day approx)

I asked plusnet 48 hours ago to explain.

NADA

Frankly couldn't care now @ end of years contract I'm off!

That's a standard error message from Diablo news server software. It just
means that you have too many open connections to the news server. Check
with plusnet to see what the maximum number of concurrent connections is.
Outlook express sometimes doesn't close connections properly so you can be
left with several open connections until the server times them out.

K many thanks for that explanation.....I however think that checking with PN
is a waste of time.

May well be the case *normally* but I'm getting the very same error
message at the moment as well and most definitely with only a single
connection being used in anger ! It worked fine last night (and early
this morning) and other connections and/or other usenet server
addresses also work fine - it's just reader03 that seems to be giving
the problem. (for me anyway) Methinks maybe it's time for mr.plusnet
to go poke the server with a pointy stick ......... or something.
Probably the *or something* would be best

That may be, but in this case it means that the PlusNet usenet server
is broken. It has been for the last couple of weeks. Currently, the
headers are messed-up and one of disk arrays has just been repaired.
