Plus net Adobe download issue?

Hi -a weird one

PlusNet ADSL is fine for all downloads - except from Adobe.com. On eight
different PCs, on two different networks, each time I go to download a
biggie e.g. 50mb, the download times out after a variable amount of data.

This happens whatever the file (if it is a big file). Yet from a Zen ADSL
connection, no probs.

Any ideas? This has been going on for a few months now, and I'm beginning to
get a complex... (because I can't see why the ISP choice should matter).

And, yes, I have tried repeatedly with different files.

To get PlusNet to reproduce and investigate this, it might be an
idea to indicate which "biggie" you mean, since no-one likes to
be wastig time trying to locate some unnamed file. If I knew
which you were trying to download, I could try the same one.

Also, you might indicate how you are connected (ADSL router, or
PCI or USB ADSL modem) to help identify the problem. Also, it
might just 'go away' if it has been in some way associated with
the routing changes being made in N America (see the service
status postings about maintenance again tomorrow morning and
Thu/Fri at <http://usertools.plus.net/status/archive/>

More or less anything on this page has not worked (via Plus) for the past
few months - I try intermittently, then have to go to another location to
download (via non-PlusNet)

>>how you are connected (ADSL router, or > PCI or USB ADSL modem) << - in

one case via ADSL router (direct to PC via ethernet). In another, on a
Windows 2000 network, behind ISA connecting via NIC to ADSL router.

I fully realise that it seems odd to point the finger at one ISP for being
problematic with one .com domain. But, after months of this happening, I
felt it appropriate to at least ask the question.

To spend 3 hours trying to intermittently download a 90mb file, then to be
able to download it straight away elsewhere is annoying, especially since in
every other aspect PlusNet is great.

Not at all. One of my clients couldn't check mail nor even see his website
as the server was apparently not responding to him, whether using BTO ADSL,
or from his parents' home, whilst I had no problems with that server, while
a check using network tools from other locations eventually turned up some
routing loops at the hosting service. I sent an e-mail and access is fine
now, but I never had any acknowledgement of any misconfiguration. Your
situation is different, of course, and as I previously mentioned there's a
change taking pace overnight which might cure things... Peter M.

Hi,

I can't say I've noticed any else reporting problems with adobe. In fact
adobe.com is a site I often use as a test site as it generally very
reliable.
What happens with large downloads from other sites are they fine? How far
through the download do you get? Is the connection in use for somethong
else at the time? Up until the download fails do you get a steady transfer
speed? If so how fast? Have you tried using a different web browser, e.g.
Opera? Opera allows you to resume downloads if the break.

Hello,

Let me know your username, the URL of the file you're trying to
download and I'll investigate.

Yes, I know it is weird - in fact I held off mentioning it until I was sure
I wasn't imagining it. For example, after trying to download the InCopy file
8 times via PlusNet, I went onto a Demon ADSL connection, and no probs.

> What happens with large downloads from other sites are they fine? << - no

problems at other sites - Microsoft is the main site I use (for SPs etc) but
lots of big demo files from other sites too.

>How far through the download do you get?<< - varies - sometimes after 10%,

sometimes - frustratingly - at e.g. 85%

>> Is the connection in use for somethong else at the time?<< - no, avoided

any other activity

>> Up until the download fails do you get a steady transfer speed? If so how

fast?<< - I believe it is steady, and full (c60) speed

>>Have you tried using a different web browser, e.g Opera? Opera allows you

to resume downloads if the break.<< - no, just IE, latest version, fully
patched. Funnily enough, if the download does conk out, I find that
sometimes when I go to 're-download', it does kind of continue where it left
off anyway. (sometimes)

Thanks - I'll post in forum also.

Thanks, shall post in PlusNet forum. I guess it could be a coincidence, but
it really has been happening for months now (and I use the Adobe site a
lot).

Are you using a download manager on the Plusnet machine?
I found that "Getright" was timing out for me with certain sites yet when I
switched back to the plain old windows download it worked no problem.

Just a thought.

Steven.

Thanks Steve - no, not using anything other than vanilla IE - mind you, now
you've got me interested... ;O)
