I'm new to home networking, have a Telus high speed connection via
phone line. 1 computer is new and runs XP while the other is old and
runs 98SE.

So, just 2 computers. I want to get a router and not sure which one.
I guess a 4 port with firewall fairly easy to use and, of course, fast
is good, so is cheap but quality most important.

all suggestions appreciated
thanks
Eric

Go for the Linksys BEFSR41. I have one and it is very easy to set up.

I also have the Linksys, which is inexpensive and easy to set up. You may
want to go for one with wireless capability so you could use it either wired
or wireless

That was my experience. You can download a user guide
that will answer most any question. I had never owned
a router before, and the only hard part was stringing
a hundred feet of ethernet cable from my study to my
wife's (not as the crow flies :-).

Cheers, N.

Since you stated FireWall, I would suggest the Linksys BEFSX41 which goes further than the
BEFSR41 since is is very simplistic FireWall.

As always, I suggest blocking both TCP and UDP ports 135 ~ 139 and 445 on *any* SOHO Router.

You could go with something like the Linksys WRT54G or GS. Then go to the
Sveasoft website and get the third party firmware for it. This will
increase the routers capabilities to that of a much more expensive router.
Linksys firmware has been put in the public domain and some third party
programmers have increased the routers capability to match the actual
chipset used to construct the router.
