I just installed a linksys router on one computer using Windows Xp. I am
running ethernet cable to my other computer running Windows ME. If the cable
is connected the the ME computer and I start it up, Explorer freezes. I have
to CTL, ALT, DLT to end Explorer. I can then use it again for a few more
seconds until it freezes. If I start the computer w/out the cable
connection, it starts and runs fine. I can put plug the cable in and connect
to the internet but each time I click to a new pages, it freezes again and I
have to go through the whole process. It does not close down the internet
window I am using but it allows me the nxt page and freezes again! Argh!
What the heck is happening??? Please if anyone can help, let me know!

I would suspect malware on the ME machine - or you're getting a conflict
with the XP machine because of static IP's

check the ME machine for malware first...
download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=stinger

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:
http://www.trendmicro.com/cwshredder/

download AdAware SE Personal Edition from www.lavasoftusa.com, install,
update, and run it to remove spyware, adware, and other such nasties from
your system.

Thank you for your help and suggestions. I tried every single one (took me
forever BTW, with all the stop/start/stop/start) and NOTHING has helped. If
the cable is plugged into the computer it freezes. Without it, it's fine.
Any OTHER ideas?

Thanks

If you managed that lot in les than 45 minutes you have either an incredibly
fast machine - or a very small one!

Check your HOSTS file - in C:\Windows (it may be a hidden file - no
extension).
How big is it?? overlarge HOSTS files can cause this sort of problem in
Win9x systems.
Check your Temporary Internet Files folder - what is the maximum size set at
in Internet Properties? - I would suggest no more than 40 MB. - Delete the
contents (together with offline content) using the option there.

There could be a problem with the driver program for the network
adapter on ME. Go to Device Manager and un-install the network
adapter. Then reboot and let ME re-install it.
