HP notebook with P3 as desktop replacement
Windows XP Home
Orinoco Silver PCMCIA card
Netgear wireless router

In this office building there are several wireless networks.
When I boot my notebook in the morning, sometimes it sees our
Netgear wireless router, sometimes it sees others. It's
confused, I'm more so.

I go to the Wireless Network Connection Properties menu, and
under Preferred networks ONLY ours appears. However, under
Available networks there's everything within range. In
Available, I click on ours, then Configure, and it appears to be
okay --- but the unit continues to try to hookup with other
networks, ignoring our wireless router.

I'd like to tell this system to look ONLY at our own network. Is
there a way?

Thanks, gurus!

Not sure this will work, but should.

Leave only your network in the 'Preferred networks' box. Delete all others.

Click the 'Advanced' button.
Uncheck the 'Automatically connect to non-preferred networks' checkbox.

In Advanced, there's no option like that!

Windows XP's built in wireless management tools always want to
connect to the strongest signal, even if it is from a different
network.

I don't know what the repair is. Try searching the archives of
this newsgroup via groups.google.com using "Windows XP" as a keyword
to see how others have dealt with the situation.

We may not be talking about the same configuration screen. The screen I
am referring to (and I am assuming the windows in managing your
connections, rather than the wireless card's software) is:

Start|Connect to|Show all connections
Right click on your wireless connection and choose Properties.
Click on the Wireless Networks tab.
The 'Advanced' button on that screen is the one I was referring to.

Have you assigned a SSID to your Preferred Network router and the same SSID
to your card? Also see if changing the operating channels might help.
