Please help. My networking is trashed

I have a home network consisting of 1 computer with Windows ME and an
HP4050tn printer connected to each other and the internet via a D-Link
router. Everything was running great until yesterday. I attempted to add
VPN support to my computer, using Control Panel ==> Add/Remove Programs ==>
Add/Remove Windows Components. I was told to reboot to complete setup.

Here's where the problems start. Realize I now have no connection to the
internet. I try running the Internet Connection Wizard. No luck. I try
running the Home Networking Wizard. Still no luck. I try pinging my router
from the ms-dos prompt. That works. I ping my printer and localhost, both
also good. I go to my network properties and remove everyhting and add back
my nic card, tcp/ip, and client for microsoft networks. Nothing. I fire up
my network scanner, thinking I'll see if I can scan localhost, the printer,
and the router. I get an error message telling me there is a UDP socket
error. Still no internet. Decide to try and print something to my network
printer.
It's not working. I can ping it, sure, but that's about it.

I see that there is some patch that you can download from Microsoft that
others recommend for ME. Tried that and checked out the registry per the
Microsoft Knowledgebase article. No change.

I see that several people recommend re-installing Windows ME, so I fire up
setup.exe in my options/cabs file. Now THAT did something!!! It
effectively removed every upgrade I ever made to the computer and left me
sitting there still without any networking.

Next idea that occurs to me, I fire up telnet. My HP printer has a telnet
server that can be used for configuration. Type in my printers IP address
only to find out that it is not working.

I'm fresh out of ideas. Anybody else got any? Could really care less about
the VPN. Just want to get my TCP/IP working.

TIA

Shilo

Problem Solved. I follwed the advice given by Carey Holzman and used the
program found at http://www.bu.edu/pcsc/internetaccess/winsock2fix.html .
Now my only problem is upgrading ie5.5 back to ie6. When I attempted to
fix my problem by re-installing ME, ie reverted back to 5.5. Now I am
unable to upgrade back to ie6. The starnge thing is Outlook Express is
still 6.0. If anyone has any tips, they would be appreciated. Thanks
Carey for the help you offer in this group. It took me a while to find
it, but it sure helped me out.

Your problem is unfortunately common -
You need to remove IE COMPLETELY, then reinstall it

First - download the IE install of your choice - look here for instructions
http://www.broomeman.com/support/wsiedown.html

Then download IEradicator from www.litepc.com

Run the downloaded IEradicator - it will remove IE completely, so make sure
that you've back up what you need to keep

Then run the IE install

post back if you have questions - BEFORE doing anything!<g>

Thanks for the tip. What exactly does IEradicator remove? Will I lose all
of my shell integration? Thanks again.

Depends what you mean by shell integration - so long as you back up your
favourites and (required) Cookies, there's nothing there that you'll lose
that you can't get back easily enough.
