Hi there. I'm (obviously) rather ignorant when it comes to this
wireless networking thing, and could use some help. From searching
google and the web I've gotten snippets of answers to some questions,
but can't quite put the whole picture together.
Here's the deal. I'm trying to set up a wiress network connecting the
following "clusters" of equipment in my house:
#1 (1st floor office)
-----------------------------------------
Main Computer (Win XP Pro)
Cable Modem
#2 (Basement)
-----------------------------------------
Second Computer (Win 98)
#3 (1st floor living room)
-----------------------------------------
Tivo
Xbox
On the advice of a salesperson, I purchase a Netgear WGR614 802.11g
Router, a Netgear WG602 Access Point, and a WGE101 Bridge. I
connected and configured the router on cluster #1, but that's where my
success ends. I haven't even tried to connect #3 using the bridge
yet.
Now, here's the problem and question I have:
I was told that I could get my computer #2 to access the wireless
router (and share the Cable modem) using a wireless access point. I
have computer #2 plugged into a 10/100 switch, and the AP plugged into
the same switch. I had trouble even accessing the AP, however, and
called Netgear tech support for help. After spending about 1/2 hour
on the phone with the tech, it was clear that we were having problems
communicating (he spoke with a thick Indian accent - which is tough
since I don't hear well - and I, obviously, was not the smartest
cookie on networking stuff). Anyway, he suggested to me that an AP
could not be used for this function, and that any other computers I
wanted to share the Cable Modem would need individual Wireless Access
Cards. Is this true ? If so, can anyone give me an outline of what I
need to do to make it work ... as far as configuring workgroup names,
making sure wireless settings between the AP and router are
compatible, etc.
In other news, I noticed (of course) on the Netgear website that they
are advertising a new "super" 802.11g router / firewall / print server
device that can achieve >100 Mbps using their special protocol ...
anyone think it might be worth returning my WGR614 router and going
with this new model ? It would cost about an extra $60 over what I
paid, but for future upgrade purposes and - more importantly - the
built in print server function I'm thinking about it.
Most sincere thanks for any help you all care to share.
