i've got a windows 98 (not sure what version) and an XP home edition PC i'm
trying to conect using a cross over cable directly between two networking
cards. but neither machine can see the other, i've set both up under a
workgroup called "workgroup" and given both machines an IP address on the
same network but still no luck.

I've heard that windows 98 has a password enryption issue that stops it from
connecting to a network unless adjustments are made in the registry.

Can some one help??

what do you mean by "see?"

what do the status lights on your NICs say?

can you ping each machine from the other?

There's no registry change needed on Windows 98.

The easiest way to set everything up is to run XP's Network Setup
Wizard on both computers:

XP ICS - Starting the Network Setup Wizard
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...rksetupwiz.htm

If you can't use a floppy disk or an XP CD-ROM for the Wizard, you can
copy XP's Wizard file to a USB flash drive or CD-R and run it on
Windows 98:

C:\Windows\System32\Netsetup.exe

If you want to configure the network manually, assign IP addresses in
the same subnet, then make these settings in Control Panel | Network
on Windows 98:

1. Add these network components if they aren't already present:

TCP/IP protocol
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks

2. Remove these network components if they're present:

IPX/SPX protocol
NetBEUI protocol
Client for NetWare networks

3. Set the workgroup name to the same name as the Windows XP computer
uses (default for XP is MSHOME).

There's no Wizard for setting up a network with Win2000. The Windows
98 settings that I listed above work fine with the default network
settings on Win2000.

It isn't strictly necessary, but specifying the same workgroup name on
Win98SE and Win2000 will make accessing other computers a little
easier.
