Please help--Error 59

I'm stumped, after using this setup on my home network for 3 years, all of
a sudden I'm getting an odd error.

I have 4 active computers on this peer to peer network. One machine is
Win2k, one is WinME and 2 are Win98 SE. One of the Win98 machines is a
laptop and that is the one with the problem. I have two options for
connecting this machine, cabled or wireless. These machines are connected
to a 5 port switch and then to a linksys NAS Router which is connected to
the modem. DHCP is handled by the router.

I am aware that I need to disable the Wireless card adapters in order to
connect, and have been doing that for 3 years. Yesterday I cabled the laptop
and turned it on. Before getting to the User logon screen I get a message
that says.

"The following error occurred while loading Protocol number 0. Error 59: A
Network Error has occurred."

When I go to Winipcfg and try renewing IP address for the NIC adaptor it
says "Error An IP address conflict was detected: renewing adapter."

I have tried powering down the switch and router to reset the tables. It
still does the same thing.

I tried the Wireless card and it works fine. Is much slower and I don't
have a wireless Access point in the office that I need to transfer my data
to so I need to get this to work. Can anybody help?

R Hyte

Hi Hyte,

There is an IP address problem. Disconnect the Win98 from the network, boot up and remove
any static IP's configured on it or check to find that IP being used by another device. This error
indicated that the IP this machine has or is trying to use is already being used.

Thanks,
Gary

Thank you Gary your answer was right on.

However I had to solve it on my own earlier. Someone had pulled the cables
from the switch box and replugged them in a different order. One device
requires a fixed IP address. For some reason when I rebooted the router and
switch box it did not clear the routing tables. My router is configured to
only allow 5 IP addresses so when I turned the laptop on the only IP
available was the already used Fixed IP.

I sorted out the cables, powered computers, switch, router and modem down
and then rebooted everything and it all worked.

Thank you
R Hyte
