please help i cant connect

iHave just set up a new computer with windows XP i'm trying to connect to the
internet using a lan connection the server has broadband internet and my
computer says the lan is conected and working but when i open internet
explorer it says i'm not conected any help with this would be greatly
appreciated

P.S I don't know much about computers or networks so step by step
instructions would be appreciated
