Hi,

How is your DNS setup in your Active Directory domain? Are both of your
domain controllers (and Global Catalogs) also DNS servers? Do clients have
both DNS servers entered under TCP/IP properties (Preferred DNS and
Alternative DNS)?

In Active Directory, your client computers (and member servers) use Active
Directory DNS to locate domain controllers, global catalogs and other
services. If your clients have only one DNS server under their TCP/IP
properties and this server fails (of your shut it down) your clients will
fail to find second server in domain...

I hope this helps,

Hi,

Domain/forest can run for some time without server(s) holding FSMO roles
(you will not be able to add another domain or bulk number of users without
FSMO roles, but domain/forest will work for existing users). If you know
(and only if you know) that server that held FSMO roles will not be brought
back on-line only then you should seize FSMO roles.
If you plan to bring server that holds FSMO roles back on-line then you
should not size FSMO roles!
