My friend asked me this question recently and I am not sure what is the best
answer for it. The question is for a Windows Application (.Net) up to ten
con-current users to a remote server (SQL) ie the physical location of the
server is some distance (miles) away. What is the best set up between the
client office to the server in order to have Security, Robustness, Reliable,
Fast and Scalable data connection? Please don't tell me a physical cable
(fibre optic) to link the sites together. Both sites have internet
access.Thanks.

As alexk hinted, there isn't really enough info here to say a lot about
it.

Here is a general answer to a general question. If you can't have a
direct connection or a leased line, you should probably look at a VPN link.
However VPN doesn't always work well with database applications. The latency
of the connection can cause timeout problems. Terminal Services might be a
better option (because the app would run on the terminal server in the same
network as the database server with fast network access).

You can even use both TS and VPN. The app runs on the terminal server
and the KVM data between client and server has the extra security of VPN
authentication and encryption.
