Hi I am wondering if it is possible to have a remote monitors on a LAN, IE
have a PowerPoint picture show running on my server and some way send it to
a stand alone monitor in my shop,, not for adverts or sort of thing but
weather forecast and pictures of the island for the tourists. I know it
sounds a bit much , but it would put a CRT 19 inch monitor to better use.

Any idea would be welcome

Many thanks

Why not just run a low-spec PC to drive the display? Or a Cat5 VGA
extender with dedicated cabling (likely to cost more than the monitor is
worth, though)? You can also get boosters for VGA, but that requires
running VGA cable which is a bit chunky, and expensive for good quality.

f you really want to do it over a LAN you could set up a low spec PC to
drive the monitor in the window and run one of the 'monitor' (VNC) apps that
allows the remote machine to see the desktop of the far machine. The
software is usually used for monitoring kids and a good free example can be
found at:>

Failing that just use a TV and utilse the TV output on your video card,
setting it up as a secondary monitor. Then just feed it with a cheap coax
into it's ariel socket ;-)

That's odd, I thought it was usually used for administering remote or
headless servers ...

It is possible but it's probably not the best way to get the result you
want. It would probably be better to set up a cheap PC driving a
display. You could use Windows and PowerPoint but I think that would be
unnecessarily expensive.

If I were doing this I would load the PC with Linux and use OpenOffice
rather than PowerPoint, but you could also use OO with Windows. It's
reasonably straightforward and you should be able to prepare your
presentation in PP and show it with OO.

If you feel the need you can use it for that too, it's very flexible ;-)

Use virtually any version of Windows from 95 upwards plus the freebie
Powerpoint viewer. There are a few esoteric things that this might not cope
with, but the majority of ppt presentations will work just fine.

Hi

Thanks for the information guys ,helpful in letting me decide what to do,, I
think it might have to be on of my old slowest machines,, though the coax
and a video out sounds good for a cheap skate like me,, once again thanks
