Pipex ceased line without reason

Hi,
My friend gave me a call yesterday to say he'd been without his ADSL
connection since Tuesday.
I went over to his house day to take a look.

Telnet'd onto his Zyxel router - and noticed no underlying ADSL
connection.
Called Pipex - they could not locate his UserId on the system.
Took a note of his BT phone number, and put us on hold for about 10
minutes.
Came back and said "Sorry, but BT have ceased your line for ADSL
connectivity"
"You'll need to re- apply for Broadband with us... But before you do,
call BT (not BT wholesale) BT.. on 150.. and ask why they ceased your
line, so you can make sure they don't do it again...then call us back,
or go online to pipex.net and re-apply, but you will be subject to 12
months minimum term"

LOL !!

I told my friend he has a lucky escape.. and should see this as a
blessing.
So he's free to go elsewhere I would assume?

He's using 56k modem for a few weeks whilst he considers who to go
with next!!

Anyone else known of this strange phonemena?

Cheers
Steve

He's not been a victim of their vague Fair Usage Policy has he? They've
started cutting people off according to the ADSL Guide Forums

Trouble is if you need to reapply for adsl then you may have to pay the
'set up fee' which I understand is a BT charge and not an ISP supplier
charge.

I have been looking at www.eclipse.co.uk recently with a view to
changing away from Pipex myself.

I've come across a few similar cases but normally they've been caused
by either a number change or a change of 'ownership' of the account.
This is why when asked I tell users to tell everybody if the account
is changing & then double check to make sure that the relevant records
have been changed with all relevant parties.

As it it Pipex MUST have raised the cease, not BT, are they trying to
tell your friend something (like they can't be arsed, for
instance).... If BT did do it Pipex would be over them like a bad
rash because of the rules of equivalence (ceasing another ISPs service
without reason)...

I doubt it. When they suspend you they let you logon they just throttle
bandwidth to zero.

Yes, they are trying to make out the BT caused the cease, when this is
highly unlikely.
And like you say, Pipex would have happily been in touch with BT to
address the issue.

Personally, I think Pipex have done Pete (my mate) a favour!
He wouldn't want to go back to Pipex if they paid him!!

He was going to move when his 12 month contract was up anyway, and
presumably he'd pay a setup fee with his new ISP, so he's not really
losing anything. (Other than an earlier than planned termination! and
a couple of weeks or so now without ADSL).
He's actually gained piece of mind, that he's free from Pipex and it's
woes (he was having lots of billing issues), and he doesn't need to
suffer the agonising wait for a MAC!!

He's not going to re-apply to join Pipex that's for sure !

yes, I personally used Eclipse for several years. They were fine,
until Kingston took them over, and it all started to go down the
pan... I left them as the service and customer service went downhill
rapidly.
Not sure what they're like now though, it's been about 18 months 2
years since I left.

No.
He was on their low usage / capped thing (£14 a month or thereabouts)
Kept getting letters about not paying, when he was on direct debit
with them!
And used his ADSL for casual web browsing and internet banking.. he's
not into p2p, gaming or usenet binaries etc..

We are wondering though, whether they (Pipex) ceased his line through
them saying he wasn't paying, when in fact he was (Direct Debit).

Either way.. He's better off away from them.. I had to fight tooth and
nail December/January to rid myself of them.
Sent them (Pipex MD) a settlement cheque (I didn't pay a termination
fee either, just paid them what was underpaid as they hadn't invoiced
me for about 8 months) - cheque was quickly cashed.. a MAC followed
about 2 days later, and I'm now with Be*
I still get letters from Pipex threatening to cut me off, threatening
to pass overdue account to debt collection agency, and more invoices!!

My letter to the MD stated if you give me a MAC and cash this cheque
you are accepting the fact that I'm no longer a Pipex customer and owe
Pipex nothing...

Clearly they (or their useless accounting systems) think otherwise!

And I think it's possible my mate's been cut off by Pipex for "not
paying" (even though they've taken money).. and they want him to
reapply to get setup monies off him and lock him into another 12
months contract.. it's possible isn't it??

No. Not usually if he has a MAC. MACs have to be issued with a week ? IIRC now
btw.

He should complain unless he's willing to pay up to £47 for reactivation.

Do the new rules preclude an ISP from charging a setup fee then if
they migrate from another provider?

Are Pipex abiding to these new rules too?
I know they should.. but given they can't do anything else right, I'd
be suprised to see Pipex managing to dole out MACs within a week!!

Yes. he should complain I agree.
I wondering whether it's worth the agro with Pipex... he told me
yesterday he was "sick to the back teeth of them.."

£47 is better in his pocket than an ISP's.
