Pipex or Bulldog for residential 1Mbps downstream service?

I've given notice to cancel my dreaded Freeserve Broadband service,
yippee!!! They say it'll take about 10 days, we'll see though.

Now, I need to decide between Bulldog and Pipex as my next service provider.
I want to up my connection to 1Mbps downstream. I do use newsgroups quite a
bit so can anybody comment on Bulldog's newsgroup availability (I've heard
Pipex limit their download speed from newsgroups although they do have a
wide range of groups to access).

Here's the deal from Bulldog (All time 1000):
Connection - £29.36 (if I order by Tuesday, otherwise it's £58.72)
Monthly - £29.36
Minimum contract - 12 months
Contention Ratio - 40:1

And here's the deal from Pipex (Solo 1000):
Connection - £41.13
Monthly - £28.95
Minimum contract - 1 month
Contention Ratio - 50:1 (does it make that much of a difference to the
service compared to 40:1 ?)
50Mb webspace - Bonus compared to Bulldog

I've heard that Pipex customer services are very good, I've had no
experience with Bulldog.

Any comments are greatly appreciated.

Bulldog do not currently have a newserver - they used to and may have it
again one day but not atm..

If you are interested in Bulldog though - also have a look at
http://www.hi-velocity.it/

They resell Bulldog products but have a minimum contract of 3 months (as
opposed to Bulldog's 12) for most tariffs and include email accounts and
250MB of web space as standard. (and their CS is better than Bulldog's!)

Regards
Sunil

There is a news server (news.bulldogdsl.com) but it has hardly any
up-to-date posts on it but you can post on it and that works - so I use a
free news server (e.g. freenews.netfront.net) to read and then post via
Bulldog (as I'm doing with this post).

I am in the process of migrating to pipex and got a bit worried when you
said Pipex limit their download speed from newsgroups, so I phoned tech
support and they said there is no speed restrictions when downloading from
newsgroups, phewww.

I actually read a thread in this newsgroup that mentioned the limits. It was
started by "delta" at 21:17 on the 24/09/2003 titled "Pipex ADSL news d/l
limmit". IIRC it's a speed cap of some sort.

Yes but with the right news reader it's a cap of about 300kB/s. What
does that equal? A 3Mb DSL connection?

Pipex have 4 servers, you are allowed 4 connections to each server. The
first connection on each server is at 40kb/s, the 2nd at 20 and the
other 2 at under that, I think 10kB/s

I use Newspro. I can tell you how to set that up.
Never having used Newsbin Pro, I'm afraid I don't know.

I currently have Newspro set up to take headers from one server and
download the article bodies across all 4 servers (2 connections per
server) using the Msg ID.

They don't have names (well they do, but they all resolve to
news.dial.pipex.com). Their IP addresses are
195.129.110.130
195.129.110.131
195.129.110.200
195.129.110.201
