Pipex / BT ADSL telephone line quality

Friend of mine's just got ADSL off BT and Pipex (the Solo deal,
incl. Speedtouch USB modem and free micro-filters).

The telephone line quality when the modem is on is terrible -
huge amounts of hiss: in addition when somebody uses the telephone,
the ADSL connection is lost. We've tried disconnecting all the
phones but one, and trying both micro-filters, but to no avail.

Has anyone had a problem like this? Do we get BT to come and
look at the line, at the risk of a 58 quid call-out, or is it
Pipex that we need to be hassling?

Sounds like a filter problem to me, you do have a filter for each phone
don't you (including Sky box)?
Try different filters (quality ones) the Alcatel supplied ones are
notoriously dodgy, if that does not cure it I would give BT a ring as the
ADSL/Telephone wiring side is down to them.

You can get high quality filters here

It'll almost certainly be the filters. I bought some cheapo cheapo
filters when I set up my latest ADSL and the line was noisy and it took
an age to sync. Plus it occasionally disconnected when I plugged in my
Sky box. I bought some Fujitsu filters - really chunky ones with an
inductor as well as other components and everything is now fine. Voice
quality and level excellent, no hiss and totally reliable connections.
OK so the filters were a bit dearer but well worth it.

Check whereabouts you've installed the filter! In my case, I have a
doubleplug which feeds both the d/stairs and u/stairs phones. I put the
filter straight after where the BT line comes in, before the double plug -
WRONG!- This had the effects you describe. Put the filter after the double
plug and plug the phone into that.
