Yesterday I had a few disconnections from Pipex, today it seems to be
down, or is it me? I've got a synch LED on my router, but no
connection.

Can I connect to a dial up instead?

Thanks for that, it's back on now.

What would be really handy would be a dial-up in case Pipex Broadband
goes down. I don't mind PAYG - I know there are dozens of free ISPs,
but at least with a Pipex dial-up I could use the news server (rather
than Google, which gave my email address).

Pipex used to (whilst I was with them, probably still do) let you use their
dial-up service for when broadband did go down, usually you pay a monthly fee
for their dial-up account so you can use their service whilst away from home.

Their web page says this is still valid: a freephone number for
dial-up as backup but you'd have to have an open ticket with them in
order for this to be enabled. Or pay a fee to more or less guarantee
it. But in that case the money should go somewhere else as a real
backup, and preferably not over the same line/BT kit.

I *think* one of these machines, the oldest one, has a winmodem
installed and used once...
