Hello

Just had Xtreme 500 solo activated for my Windows 98 machine, through
the Alcatel 330 Speedtouch ADSL modem. It connects okay, but is very,
very slow (i.e. 1000 bytes downloaded in 10 minutes) If I browse to
Google on IE, it finds the page slowly but always ends up with the 'Page
Cannot Be Displayed'

Have called Pipex support who have advised me to install/reinstall
modem, DUN and TCP/IP in various combinations, and have tried Mozilla
and Opera and it has made no difference. Pings to various IPs and URLs
time out.

Any ideas?

TIA

Vic

Have you tried many other websites yet to get a proper representative
sample ? (i`d guess from your post that you have)

Does the HD thrash away more than you`d expect while it does nothing ?

Can you download a bandwidth monitor (www.dumeter.com) just to get a
better idea of the actual throughput ? (i`m thinking spyware may be a
factor here - the worst case I ever saw was a colleague with a decent
spec`d Sony desktop which took 6 hours to boot !)

You HAVE got a firewall and anti-virus software set up, haven't you?
If not, try these, highly recommended

I've got a W98 machine - you don't need to use DUN - this will start a
DIALUP connection. Since ADSL is "always on" you don't "dial up"

You do with a Speedtouch modem before you can use the connection - its
part of the drivers and gives you a DUN style front-end

Ah! Fairy snuff - I didn't realise that :-). I s'pose it must be with it
being a USB and powered from the port - missed that point! I use D-Link gear
which is always powered.
