Pipex account

Just set up a PC for a friend and he's signed up with Pipex. The router was
sent to me (we're about 60 miles apart.
He's given me his username and password and I'd like to have a look at his
account and set up some e-mail address, but I can't get in.

Now, he's a bit vague on most things and he's had no letter or anything
from Pipex.

Is the format of the username the full addy, e.g. (E-Mail Removed) or
just part of it? (I'me assuming that the username is the address or part of
it).

Can I actually do this from a different line (I'm assuming that I can't
actually connect his PC to Pipex from my line)?

Should he have had some paperwork from Pipex?

I know that his line has been activated: Pipex told him so and it now has
ADSL on it and never had before.

That is normal for most ISP's

What a completely stupid way of doing things! The ISP provides a
CD with easy to follow instructions that will configure it. If your mate
is that thick he can't use it, what do you think will happen when he opens
Internet explorer or Outlook express. Are you configuring that for him?
Just wait until he phones to ask "well what does it do!" - or when a page
he wants doesn't appear.
If he has had no letter, he will not know what his user name and password
is.
That's if it uses that and doesn't use a MAC number for access.
It would have been easier to visit him once the router was delivered to
his home address. You will not be able to use it from your address.

It means a physical connection has been made at the local exchange. Once
PIPEX
sorts his account they will send hi the details.

Just trying his number on a couple sites - a month ago there was no ADSl
and now there is.

It depends. Assuming he's not LLUed BT will route the connection for
the line to the ISP who pays them for the connection. Once at the ISP
it's up to them if they want to authenticate via username and password.
As far as I'm aware BT are the only ISP who doesn't validate with
username/password. So if the OP is with Pipex as well then it should,
in theory, work otherwise no chance.

>>> Should he have had some paperwork from Pipex?

If he hasn't got paperwork how did he get his username and password? If
it was by email that may be all he gets.

I have the router because I built the PC and still have it here.

It's not a wireless one - just a single port ADSL job, so there's no
software to install. I've had his PC connected to my account, so it works.

I'll configure T'bird 3 for him - OE isn't on either of our PCs.

He was given those verbally at the same time as he asked for the hardware
to be sent to me.

I thought not -- thanks for the confirmation.

I tried PN a couple of times but there was a 15 minute queue each time.

+1000

ISP's CDs are invariably NOT helpful.

Not eeven that restricted. As far as I know, which aint 100%, the
sequence goes this way.

You sync, and get a chap challenge.

The respnse goes to BT'ds PROXY radius server, who, on the basis of what
part of the address is, then route the ATM circuit to the ISP, and pass
the name/password to them and set up the ATM routing.

Thats WHY you always have an ISP specific part of the login name. To let
BT' shit know which ISP to pass it to.

Now whether or not there is a further layer to allow only a given phone
number to log in to that account I dot know.
