Ping shows Data LOSS

I've posted a few messages concerning a problem I appear to be having with
accessing https sites via my PPC2003 through a WiFi network to a Linux
server.

Out of curiosity I've tried PINGing my PPC from the Linux machine and appear
to be getting up to 50pc data loss.

My WiFi connection gives the impression it is good.

Could this data loss prevent me getting on to certain sites? I thought that
if a certain packet wasn't received it was asked for again.

That sounds a lot of lost packets for a light network. 1 or 2 % at
max.....

Yes, but if you are loosing 50% of the packets then you can spend more time
retrying than sending data. Something is wrong...

Sometimes things are not what they appear. I started getting something
like 25% data loss between my wireless, and internet or LAN boxes. I
thought it was a problem with the wireless. But it turned out to be an
ethernet incompatibility between my Linksys WAP11 v2.2 and the Linksys
EFSP switch/printserver it was connected to. I discovered which end was
the problem when I had trouble updating WAP11 firmware from wired side.

If the WAP11 is connected to an extra nic on a Linux box (where it is
now) I have no problem.

wireless1 WAP----compaq----(switch/printer)----mainpc----(pppoe)

efflandt@wireless1:~> ping -c100 mainpc
(snip)
--- mainpc.local ping statistics ---
100 packets transmitted, 100 received, 0% loss, time 100007ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 3.645/4.020/6.611/0.333 ms

You do not say if you are using an access point, but typically if an AP is
connected to a nic, it needs a crossover cable (or regular patch cable to
hub/switch).

I've got a small wired network and the Netgear 54mbs AP plugs in to a
switched hub.

I think I've narrowed the PING loss down to slowing the transmit rate of the
AP from BEST to 11mbs.

Now it is working fine though I have now found the range of the handheld
card is very low compared, lose a signal at about 30 feet whereas the PC
card in my daughter's laptop shows 80% signal at twice that distance.
