ping - network unreachable

I run nagios from one of our hosts... the other day it began reporting
that one site and all services associated with it were down. A manual
ping from the nagios host to the site ended with "network
unreachable", while a traceroute from the same host succeeded. I tried
pings from other hosts in the same lan, and they all succeeded. I then
compared the routing tables on the nagios host to the others and found
no problems.

The host (according to nagios) bounced up and down for about three
days... while it was really running the whole time.

Can someone think of a next-step in debugging this problem?

- no changes to the local routers, firewall, etc...

If you have access to router?

do an extended ping of 1000 packets or you can also from dos prompt do
a ping -t and let it run for 30 minutes
see how many packets are dropped.
