I am trying to configure an ADSL modem/router connected to 2 PCs - one via
an ethernet port, the other via USB.
When I ping the router I mostly get:
Ping transmit fail Error code 10050

Can anybody tell me the significance of this?

Access to the router's configuration program via http is rock hard. Access
to the internet via the router is a bit flakey.

TIA
Chris

- Start a DOS prompt on each machine.
- Issue this command: ipconfig /all
- What do you get in each case for: IP Address, Default Gateway,
DNS server, Subnet Mask, DHCP?

I get the expected valid replies in all cases, namely:
IP address/mask 192.168.1.4/255.255.255.0
Default gateway/DNS Server/DHCP are all 192.168.1.2

Issuing the Renew command does release and restablish the same values.

This is strange. My detailed instructions were:
> > - Start a DOS prompt on each machine.
> > - Issue this command: ipconfig /all
> > - What do you get in each case for: IP Address, Default Gateway,

yet you report one IP address only, 192.168.1.4. You cannot
have two machines with the same IP address!

Sorry I just gave the results from the one machine.

The first machine which is connected via the USB port whose address on the
router is 192.168.1.2 reports:
IP address/mask 192.168.1.4/255.255.255.0
Default gateway/DNS Server/DHCP are all 192.168.1.2

The second machine which is connected via the LAN port whose address on the
router is 192.168.1.1 reports:
IP address/mask 192.168.1.7/255.255.255.0
Default gateway/DNS Server/DHCP are all 192.168.1.1

Pinging the router (192.168.1.1 or .2 as appropriate) from either machine
gives: Ping transmit fail Error code 10050
Pinging the other machine (.4 from .7 and vice versa) gives Failed.

Ah-ha! Very often when I see a transport error 10050 that means that
there's some obnoxious spyware or adware gumming up the works. Try
downloading a copy of AdAware (free!) from http://www.lavasoftusa.com,
install it, update it, then run it and clean everything off that it finds.
Restart the system and run it again, keep running and restarting until the
system is clean.

Thanks for that Richard.
I do have a copy so will run it again (and again!)
That is very likely the answer on machine 1 but unlikely on machine 2 as it
is so rarely on the internet - but never-the-less will try it.

A useful pointer about restarting/rerunning - I have normally run it once
and then relaxed - how unwise of me!

Some spyware apps can't be cleaned on the first pass, so you have to restart
and clean them again after they've been de-activated.
