Hi all,

I have just setup a Windows Server 2003 for me. Everything works fine,
except the connection seems to be some kind of slow, when I startup.

When I do a ping with 'ping sr-file01' the my PC has some times trouble to
find the server. If I enter the static IP to ping the server I get a response
right away (192.168.11.10).

I added the following record to my hosts file on my PC
(C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc):

192.168.11.10 sr-file01

Has anybody a clue what I miss here?

If you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards,

Simon

Are these machines on the same subnet as each other? What devices are
sitting between them?

Hi Oliver,

Thank you very much for your reply.

I have both machines on the same subnet (255.255.255.0) and both machines
are connected to my wireless router which has 4 ethernet ports. I don't use
the wireless for the connection. The dynamic range is set to 192.168.11.20 to
192.168.11.100.

I haven't setup a internal DNS on my server. Do you think this could be the
problem?

Kind regards,

Simon

It certainly seems like a name resolution problem, but the entry in your
HOSTS file should have fixed that. Make sure that the name in the file is
typed exactly the same as the server's name.

On your PC, open a command prompt and type:

ipconfig /all

Does your machine get a DNS server entry for it's network card? What is it?

type:

ipconfig /displaydns

do you see an entry for your server? What is the entry?
