Phone rings = ADSL disconnects (50% of the time)

My parents have an ADSL connection that was installed by a BT engineer
about four years ago -- this means there is a filter/splitter face plate
that replaces the standard master phone socket, rather than individual
plugin filter. They used to have a second phone line, which was
implemented by a "splitter box" -- a two-way phone socket connected to
the master socket, with each socket providing a different line. This was
installed a few years before the ASDL, and deactivated before ADSL was
ordered. The box is still physically connected though; if you plug a
phone into the second "inactive" socket, you can hear very faint static.

Half the times that their phone rings from an incoming call, the ADSL
connection will be dropped and take a minute or so to reconnect. What
could be causing this? People have suggested that plug-in filters are
needed, but I don't think this is the case with old "engineer-installed"
ADSL which predates them. Could the line-splitter box be causing a problem?

Thanks for any advice,
Alex

go onto bt web site & do a self line test.

could be a ground fault with your line.

If the wiring was done correctly then you shouldn't require a plugin
filter, but if it was incorrectly wired in you have nothing to lose by
checking it out by using a filter, the prices are cheap, in fact most
likely you will know someone who has got one laying around.

It has been known for the faceplate filters to go faulty as well so
don't rule that out. Remove SSFP, connect the plugin filter to the
test socket in backplate & run a test from there with your phone & adsl
connected to that...

Sounds like a poor signal to noise ratio problem. Those BT ADSL faceplates
have loads of internal cheap 'n nasty plugs/sockets that interconnect the
pcbs. They get dirty/loose after a couple of years and can cause noise &
reduced signal problems, the first symptom of trouble is disconnections when
the phone is used. It's possible to take the faceplate apart with care and
clean the pins up.

The problem could also be the phone line itself of course, do you hear any
crackles on your phone? Also, have you been upgraded to 2Mb/s recently, as
this worsens s/n ratio.

A link to the 'self line test' page would be very useful as I can't find one
on BT....
