Poor guy here need some help from the experts please. We can not
affort HSP-Internet at this point, but we have phone line dial up
account and two computers. Recently bought a wireless router
SMC7004VWBR (cheap with rebate). We like to have this router for
internet sharing if possible. Nothing to do with the wireless yet for
now.

- PC 1 (P3-533 w2k) with internal 56K modem and NIC, normally for
dialup use;
- PC 2 (P2-400 w98se) with NIC and an cross cable handy;

So how can we have these two PCs hooks up for internet via PC1's
internal modem, I know the PC1 must turn on (even not use) if PC2 want
to access internet. Someone please kindly tips us some detail (step by
step) instruction. We are more confuse with those IP address setting,
DHCP since we have very limited experience and newbie to this.

Maybe, you should have gotten that one for dial-up. Then you could get a
stand alone wireless AP for the wireless connection and plug it into the
router.

And you should understand what a NAT router does and forget about this
cross over cable business or anything else with networking computers,
because the router is the gateway device to the Internet and your Local
Area Network -- LAN for all machines connected to the router. The router
provides the communication link between the machines.

Excellent and Thanks Bill. Lots reading and bit of confortable with
networking now. Well, there still few questions that confuse me.

0) Is this router SMC7004VWBR does all HUB, Switch, Uplink that sort
of things ?

1) A router is NOT necessary since if there is two PCs for networking,
but we are aiming for future use with wireless, so an HW router will
be kept.

2) This is what I overview of our network with router. PC1 obtain its
IP address from ISP, the NIC in PC1 will be manually set as
192.168.0.1 for its IP address, (not sure does it requires
gateway,DSN,Wins setup or not on the NIC).

3) PC2 will setup as 192.168.0.2, gateway 192.168.0.1, DSN as
192.168.0.1, with exists cross CAT5 cable.

Will this layout works, I know there will be some turning is required.

BTW, Friend who suggest me to get this router have encountered some
problem on his own. His neighbor has a Netgear MR814 which feeds a
wireless USB adpator on my friend's W2K PC, this w2k works prefectly
when access to internet, however there was a win98se previously
connected via cross cable (just like my previously setup) now not
longer works, just can not access to internet, but file sharing
between the w2k and win98se work fine. He claimed he is unable to
resolve that at this point, I am afraid I might hit the similar
situation as well.
