Hi,
I use dial-up 56k with a "win-modem".
Every time someone rings up the computer stops
responding to: keyboard, mouse, on/off button etc.
(this is when not connected to the internet - just using the
computer for something else.
The only solution is a hard reboot. Are there any suggestions
on the cause of this and/or how to deal with this? When
I can remember I unplug the phone line.

Robert

sounds like you have an answerphone software half set, or a wake-up on lan
setting in the bios wrong.

Unplugging the phone won't do anything, the problem is BT's Call Waiting.

To disable call waiting manually, pick up your telephone handset and
dial #43# To re-enable call waiting, pick up your telephone handset and
dial *43#

These codes may vary if you use a telphone service provider other than
BT, Check with your provider for the latest details on such services. To
configure a Windows 95 or 98 PC to disable call waiting for you every
time you connect:

Click on the Start menu
Select Settings
Click on Control Panel
Double-click on Modems
Highlight your modem on the General tab
Click on the Dialling Properties button
Click on the checkbox for 'To disable call waiting dial...' so that it
has a tick in it and enter your code in the box
Click on OK
Click OK again to return to the Control Panel

It is also advisable that you disable Call Minder, or any other, similar
services on your phone line before connecting, as these can change your
dialtone, preventing the modem from detecting it, and also cause
problems when the modem is dialling out. For further information on
these services including how to disable and re-enable them, contact your
telphone operator.

Sorry, I misread your post.. I thought you meant it only happened when
you were connected to the internet.

The problem is most likely with your modem or your modem drivers. Have
you tried updating the drivers? Also, make sure that in your Winmodem
setup you've disabled anything that tells your modem to answer calls.

Routinely, go into the BIOS setup and ensure that "wake-up-on-modem" or
whatever it is called is not implemented. But that's probably not the
problem.

You will probably have run a program which uses the modem and answers
the phone automatically. This may have happened without your knowledge.
Then the program has terminated itself and removed itself from memory.
But it has left in place the detection of the ring tone (program bug);
so when the phone rings, whatever bytes happens to be in the memory
location that the program used to occupy are executed as a program.

I would first update the modem driver and any communications programs
that use the modem.

If the problem remains, you have some troubleshooting to do: you need to
check what programs are loaded at system startup, temporarily disable
them, etc.

When the system hangs you may be able to check the running processes
with Ctrl-Alt-Del and to look at the Event Log if you're running Win
NT/2000/XP/2003.

HTH,
