We have WG602 access point, Netgear 401 wirelss PCMCIA cards in three
laptops. Only the two laptops running WinXP periodically loses wireless
connection, but reconnects after about 1-2 seconds. This occurs
approximately once a minute.

Swapped hardware and eliminated hardware as the cause. Changed WG602
setting from "auto" to "802.11b only" mode. Turned off WEP. Unplugged
wireless phones and microwave. Neighbors do not have wireless. This occurs
all day and all night. Brief outage is not exactly every minute - seems to
vary by about 20 to 30 seconds. No problems with my Win2000 laptop. Have
latest drivers and firmware for access point and PCMCIA cards.

In addition, sometimes the connection does not get re-established. At this
point, I need to turn WEP on then back off, and connection is
re-established. Once in a while, that doesn't work and I get a message
"cannot communicate with driver", at which point, a re-boot is required.
TIA

If you had not said WinXP, I would have guessed you were using it.

A lot of people are having problems with connections dropping with
WinXP. I have now seen more than one cure for it, but as I don't use
XP myself, I have not kept track. I suggest you use groups.google.com
to search the archives of this newsgroup for messages about xp dropping
connections; you'll probably find many such messages

(c&p)
1. Click START button, then SETTINGS, then CONTROL PANEL.
2. Double click ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS.
3. Double click SERVICES
4. Scroll down in the list to WIRELESS ZERO CONFIG, right click and click
PROPERTIES.
5. In the box that opens, click the STOP BUTTON.
6. Select DISABLED from the STARTUP TYPE listbox, then click the OK button.
(end c&p)
