Performance issues in fiber conencted building

We have two buildings that are connected by a fiber link. The fiber
runs from one 1gig switch to another 1gig switch. There are about 15 pc
connected to the second switch. Some of the people in the second
building have been complaing about their computers being slow - but it's
when they printing, getting email, accessing the accounting application
etc - network stuff. How could I test or get a performance reading for
that part of the network and compar it to the speed in the first
building - where I'm not getting these complaints.

I'm sure I could connect a monitor to the second switch, but I would
know how to "test" or "compare" - or even what to look for that
indicated a issue existed.

We're running Win Server 2003 and XP workstations. The building is wired
with CAT6 and most have 10/100/1000 NICs.

Thanks,
Mike

Are the 1gig switches managed? If so you can telnet into them and check the
port stats for errors.

I don't think the switch is managed. I looked at it and it does not have
a telnet port on the back - so I assume not. Its a Netgear Prosafe 16
with a fiber module.

One thing I did as a test was to ping my PDC and then yahoo.com from my
PC and then from a pc in the other building. I did get the same results
for each.

I don't understand why when pinging yahoo.com I get a TTL=52, but when
pinging the IP of my PDC the TTL=128. How could pinging something
outside of my network, that also has to be resolved compared to an
internal IP address take longer?

Mike
