perflib error 1008, why is the only solution to disable them?

I get the following error anytime I run an NBF perfmon.
Now I have seen this error message all over the net and on the MS site and
the consistent solution is to disable the counter to stop the messages. What
if I want to see the counter? Where can I find into to actually fix it?
