Per Interface NetBIOS Name

I have a Windows 2003 Server with 2 network interface. I want to change the
name on one of the interfaces, so Windows will register this interface with
different NetBIOS name.

In other words .... I want NetBIOS / NetBT to resolve the primary name to
the first interface (as it does today) but resolve an alternative name to
the secondary interface. Is this possible and how?

Thanks!

PS: This is due to the fact that this is a test virtual machine that will be
copied many times. Only the second interface will be available on the
network, and I hope to be able to change the name of it to avoid duplicate
name conflicts.

No, you can't do that. The name belongs to the machine, not the
interface.

If you are thinking of having cloned virtual machines running on a
network you will need to consider other problems as well. If you simply copy
the vm you will also have duplicate MAC addresses on the virtual NICS. You
can avoid this by copying only the vhd file and creating a new vmc for each
instance. You may also need to worry about duplicate SIDs.

I believe you can do this by creating static WINS records for each NIC's IP
address, which means that each NIC would also need a static IP address.

It doesn't sound like this would help in your situation though. Even if you
were using DNS to do it, you would need static IP addresses with static DNS
records.

Hello,

maybe you would resolve your problem at the root.
You trouble comes from duplication of VM.
So you need to make them unique again.

My solution:
Make a template VM
copy newsid to the template:
http://www.microsoft.com/france/tech...ty/newsid.mspx

After every duplication, launch newsid to get a new unique SID & netbios
name.

So you won't need two netbios names anymore

Hope it helps, that the way we duplicate standalone VM on our VmWare
environnement.
