Peer-to-peer networking problems

I am an IT analyst at a medium sized company. I have a
peer-to-peer network setup consisting mostly of Win 98
machines but there are a few Win XP machines. There are
two issues that I would like to get a little help with if
possible.

1. Sometimes on the Win 98 machines, when you open
network neighborhood the screen is blank and the
flashlight sits there and searches for a long time. If
you leave it long enough it eventually finds the
computers. What is causing it to be so slow?

2. On the Win Xp machines when you try to view Network
Places or Entire Network it does not show all computers.
One fix I have found to this is to go into the properties
of the NIC card and change media type to 10 base t full
duplex or change it to 100 base t full duplex. However
this is not working for me right now. Are there any
known issues with networking between 98 and XP?

I would greatly appreciate any help. Thank you.

What happens if you turn on and log in every PC on the network, then walk
away for more than 15 minutes? Does browsing work correctly then?
