Make sure that all of the computers have IP addresses in the same
subnet.
The most likely reason that you can't ping a computer is that firewall
on that computer is blocking access. In particular, you must
permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on the
local area network connection -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:
