Wonder if anyone can help me please... I have been running a DG834G
modem/router for some time now and very happy with it. I have recently been
using a bit torrent client to download files and notice that the download
speeds are very slow compared to my other activities online. I have just
tested the speed performance of my connection with some of the online speed
testing sites and my connection measures up OK. Basically my question is as
follows....

I have been told by a colleague that my Netgear DG834G needs setting up to
allow access to the ports in the range 6881 - 6999. The problem is, Im not
sure if he is telling me correct information or not. I would much like to
hear it from some experts to let me know if I'm going in the right direction
with this information, or whether I'm wasting my time..... He says if I free
up these ports my bit torrent downloads will speed up no end.... At present
I am experiencing 5 - 6k a second on a 1megabit connection.

Furthermore, if the information is correct, how do I apply such settings to
the DG834G router/modem?

Can anyone help me with this, as it seems there is a problem with my
download speeds when downloading bit-torrents files, but I want to know I'm
doing the right thing to improve the situation.

Comments please would be extremely useful and very much appreciated. Also if
the info is correct, how do I adust the DG834G to allow this speed increase?

Many Thanks
Tony

You need to create a rule or rules for Inbound Services that will map
ports on the router to ports on your PC - it's in the manual.

I presume that if port-forwarding in a multi-PC environment then you need to
invoke IP address reservation so that each PC always gets the same IP
address. Otherwise you could be forwarding to the wrong PC for the given
port range. Is this correct?

At least that's how I've set up my DG834G to work with Shareaza with a
different fixed Shareaza port for each PC(laptop), fixed IP addresses for
each and a port-forwarding rule for each.

That's true - I always use fixed addresses anyway to avoid the hassle
that DHCP can cause.
