Okay, finally I find out my problem is that 32 bit pcmcia
support was not included in the version of Windows 98 2nd
Edition I have installed.

Is this feature avaialble as a download from the net?

really ? I didn't know there was such a version!

when i normally install on a laptop , partway thru the install there is a
dialog about using 32bit support...

maybe run thru your install again with the card inserted?

I certainly dod not choose to do that. The help info from
IBM (I have a thinkpad 380XD) is a bit thin about what
it's BIOS setup includes..and I can't find any 'press key
for setup options' to do anything in the CMOS

Thank you for replying promptly, it's one of the few
things that gives me hope!!

if you still have the original install , i think there is a config program
in "program files"

good luck:>

(sometimes I think they all need more ventilation!)
