I'm searching through the wireless cards at newegg looking for one I can
attach a pigtail to. I'm woefully uneducated on this topic and due to
company restrictions, I have little choice but newegg to purchase from
(unless it is something I can get a local computer shop to order for me, so
that means it would have to be in Tech-Data or Avus stock). Any suggestions
welcome

I can't comment on that particular card you posted, but here is a Web site
that gives you some specifics of what cards have external antenna
connectors. I'm sure Newegg has some of them.

The Proxim b/g cards have an external antenna connector
http://www.proxim.com/products/all/o...ard/index.html and
you would have the comfort of product support from a very well respected
wireless OEM. Their Orinoco a/b/g Combo cards also have an external
connector which is hidden under the label on the antenna part of the card
that protrudes from the laptop when it's in the machine. This is not a
publicised feature though (one assumes that it gets used during testing when
the card is manufactured) and requires you to punch a hole in the label and
obtain an SSMB connector or pigtail from these people www.fab-corp.com to
connect to your chosen external antenna. There are many other cards
available with connectors though your preference for cardbus means that your
choice is limited. Hope this helps....

The company I work for has gone through thousands of Compex products, and I
can say I'm not impressed. Their PCI NICs were fine, but all the wireless
stuff was total trash. The drivers ruined computers. I haven't had
experience with this card in particular, but I'd say stay away. Their older
ones were rebranded Eumitcom WL11000 type.

The newer cards seem to have lost that feature.
I did some close comparison of the web pages, which changed a couple of
months ago, and it looks like the external connector was dropped from the
Silver cards.

Could you be more specific about that? I don't see any sort of soft spot
on my Orinoco Silver where I would expect to find the connector. (Mine has
the external connector on the end, which used to be covered by a very
obvious little plug.) Is there a page illustrating the work to be done?

OK. How about the b/g Gold? I just ordered the the b/g Gold that is
described at the link voldermort provided. Have I just wasted 90 USD?

Following the link to download the data sheets from that page, I find
"Both Gold and Silver versions include a built-in connector for an
external Range Extender Antenna which improves connecting from a location
where it is difficult to 'see' an Access Point."

On the page for the "b" card, not "b/g", the story is different.
http://www.proxim.com/products/all/o...ard/index.html
"Connector for external Range Extender Antenna (Gold only)"

I have an older silver card, no longer listed on their pages, although they
still have the "gold classic". I have the external connector at the end.

Excellent. (excellent news for me anyway. sorry about your silver card)
Thank you for the information. I posed the question to the "outstanding
tech support" they are reported to have and received this in return:

"Your message

To: (E-Mail Removed)
Subject: 802.11 b/g Gold pc card
Sent: Tue, 26 Aug 2003 14:18:01 -0700

did not reach the following recipient(s):" etc etc etc

Their tech support email is bouncing (and I even sent it plain text in case
they are refusing html email due to the recent worms). I'm not sure if I
should beleive or not beleive the claims of outstanding tech support if
their tech support email bounces <g>

It was until they released the SMC EliteConnect SMC2532W-B 200mW which is
virtually identical to the Engenious/Senao, Zcomax and Demarctech 200mW
cards based on the Prism 2.5 chipset. But, the best part about the SMC
though is that it comes with a detachable antenna that exposes two RP-MMCX
connectors (Engenious/Senao offers integrated or external, not both options
in one like the SMC). Also, the SMC is about $60 shipped according to
Pricegrabber. Last I checked the other cards are going for $100+ each. I
just got two cards this week and they ROCK. I don't particularly like the
connection software that comes with the SMC (it's a bit finicky), but the
Zcomax software is rocking and works just fine.
