PCI Wifi on old PC

I have an old PII machine (Gibabyte 686-LX) which I've been trying to
get a Belkin 802.11g PCI card to work with but it just doesn't seem
compatible. With the card inserted the machine doesn't do a thing -
won't POST or even show a video signal. There are no other cards in
the machine except for the video card (tried PCI and AGP). First
question: am I likely to ever get this card to work in this machine
and Second: If not are there any cards that are likely to work with
it? BTW I seem to have the latest BIOS in the machine and I've tried
the card in another (newer) machine and it works fine. Any help
appreciated.

No it won't, I've been down this route and I think you'll find that the PCI
bus and/or BIOS is too old. Even when I found a PCI card that claimed to
work it still wouldn't.

I gave up in the end and used a USB WiFi Dongle as the PC had two spare USB
sockets.

If you haven't got USB you may have more success in fitting a PCI USB card?

True, but this worked for me, maybe USB 1.1 cards are not quite so
particular?...
