PC Wireless adapter not getting DHCP IP

Ok here´s the situation...

I have an AP connected directly to a cable modem. I have a laptop
running XP home with an Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI
adapter.

The modem issues an IP to the AP no problem. However, the IP for the
wi-fi adapter, although configured for DHCP always gets a private net
IP 169.xxx.xxx.xxx which spells DHCP problems right?

I have had the system working perfectly twice and then stop for no
apparant reason, both times adapter TCP/IP was set to DHCP.
Am I right in thinking that my cable provider gives me 1 IP, this is
picked up by my AP which then issues my adapter with an IP within the
same range?

If so, then why is that when I manually configure the adapter TCP/IP
settings using all the IP´s for Subnet, gateway, DNS servers that were
assigned when it worked, it doesn´t work??

I am beginnig to think there must be some compatibility issue between
my wi-fi adapter and my AP. Maybe I will try reinstalling the
drivers/firmware on both devices or should I just get a router?

Any help very much appreciated,

Nick

Does your cable provider give you more than one IP? Usually there's only one
IP per account and everyone then uses NAT (via a router) to allow other
computers to use that one IP. With your current arrangement, you'll be
needing more than one IP from the cable Co. I suggest a wireless router and
that will give you the NAT capability you need.
