NetBIOS -- Browsing is a NetBIOS application. You didn't describe any weirdness, one of of you machines is supposed to insist on being master browser for each subnet, so we must presume that you mean something like "one laptop insists on being ANOTHER master browser" or "one laptop insists on being DOMAIN master browser instead of the PDC Emulator." What's weird? If it is that you don't have a Domain Master Browser on this same subnet it might be due to disabling NetBIOS on the PDC Emulator. If it is just that a laptop was chosen master browser for a random subnet then that is normal as any machine CAN be master browser but the highest ranking machine SHOULD win. > Can ping IPs on the net just fine. Also,
After this machine elects itself Master Browser, it can't find any machines on subnet by name, but can ping them. It seems to think it's on it's own subnet. No, that is incorrect. In general, the highest 'ranking' machine will win. The "longest booted" is however one of the tie-breakers. But that is down near the end of the checks right before "alphabetical". What OS & version (role would be important if you had a domain) are the two machines running (exactly)? Are both machines listed in the same WORKGROUP (since you have no domain)? Each workgroup is supposed to have a (different) Master Browser. You can always search for Google for: [ MaintainServerList registry "master browser" site:microsoft.com ] ....this will get you the KB article for disabling master browser on the laptop but you may have no actual problem here. And also articles for the full criteria on winning a browser election: It is also (slightly) possible that you have a broadcast problem with your hub. Although this should be unlikely, I have recently heard of enough of these reports to suggest that crappy hub hardware or network cables are more of a concern than should be expected. From your other message: > After this machine elects itself Master Browser, it can't find any machines > on subnet by name, but can ping them. It seems to think it's on it's own > subnet. Ahhhhaa.
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d...i_brs_ECEA.asp "The following criteria determine whether or not a browser has won an election: a.. If the election version of the browser is greater than the election version of the sender, the browser wins. If not, the browser uses the next election criterion. The election version is the revision of the browser protocol and is not related to the operating-system version. b.. If none of the criteria above have determined the election, then the server with the lexically (alphabetically, including numbers and symbols) lowest name wins. In this case I have some Win2k machines that stay in the office. We have folks that come in with XP laptops and hook in. Is the "election version" different on all OSs? Will shutting down the browser service on the Win XP box allow the Win2k box to be master browser? Yes, stopping the computer browser service on a machine will prevent it
forcing a browser election. But as Herb pointed out, it will not be able to browse the LAN if it is not in the same workgroup as the LAN machines. You can only see other workgroups if there is a Domain Master Browser. And only a PDC (or the W2k equivalent) can be a DMB. s wrote: > Ahhhhaa. > http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d...i_brs_ECEA.asp > "The following criteria determine whether or not a browser has won an > election: > > a.. Pretty much -- there are several other major criteria and serveral minor. > Will shutting down the browser service on the Win XP box allow the Win2k box > to be master browser? Probably a poor idea since the Computer Browser service is both for the Master Browser and for BROWSING (finding and registering such information even when not a browser.) Use MaintainServerList or perhaps (with caution) consider: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Services\Browser\Parameters\IsDomainMaster = TRUE If you set IsDomainMaster on a workgroup server it will be the "Preferred Master Browser" but if you ever install another computer there as a PDC (or emulator) AND using the same domain/workgroup name then you will interfere.
