hi,

here's the problem:

Computers connected directly to the internet will connect to the
internet. But routers connected to the internet will not connect. It's
that simple. There are no cable problems, everything simple has been
tried. It's a more complicated networking problem. There are probably
switches or other routers upstream to were I am connecting - that may
be a factor...

So to rehash. A router and any pc connected to a router will not
connect to the internet. But plug a cable from the pc to where the
router was plugged and that pc will connect to the internet.

what is the fix?

thanks,

Lee g.

Lee,
Without a lot of details its hard to know what you've tried. Simply
sounds like it might be a firewall issue. Have you checked to turn
off the firewall, software inlucded with the PC or as part of the OS?

The first thing I always try is to turn everything off. The turn on
the modem (DSL or other device from your ISP) wait a few minutes.
Then turn on your router. Again wait for the entire device to boot
up. Then finally turn on the computer attached to the router. In
most cases this allows all the default settings to negotiate in the
correct order. This of course assumes you are using DHCP and all.

Sorry if this is too basic. Just thioguth I'd mention this first.
Good luck.

If the workstation computers connected directly are working then they
must be accepting DHCP configured IP addresses. The router must do the
same for the WAN. The router must then be made the gateway for the
workstations (configured via the DHCP server)
