PC can't send email via Airport

Can I beg the group's help?

I run a PPC iMac OSX 10.5.4 and a PPC iBook 10.4 through a graphite
Airport and DLink DSL-502T router to use Virgin Net broadband. They
work fine for web, Mac Mail email, down- and up-loads... whatever.

My neighbour also connects to our Airport network for web and email.
She uses a Dell with Windows XP. She has full web access and can
receive emails of any size BUT as of about six weeks ago, she cannot
forward mails or send replies which are larger than a few words. We
have entered the correct account settings into Pegasus, Outlook
Express and now MSN Live Mail, all with the same result. I can recall
no significant change to the Airport or Router which took place six
weeks ago.

We have also spoken to Virgin Net who say they can see nothing wrong
with the account at their end. I also set up my own Virgin Net email
account (which works fine on my Macs) on her machine and got the same
result: can receive but can only send very very short replies.

This implies that the problem is either with the Airport or the
Router.

Is there something specific I should be looking for on either?
Can 40 bit WEP protection on the Airport interfere with email?
I have entered no port mapping instructions on the Airport – should I?
The Mac Mail default is to use port 110 without SSL but with password.
I've tried the nearest I can to this on the PC programs, to no avail.

And why does my Mac Mail work fine with mail.virgin.net for both in-
and outgoing mail, yet Virgin Net say it should be set as
pop.virgin.net for incoming and smtp.virgin.net for outgoing?

I am banging my head on the desk here so any help gratefully recieved!

Any "Unable to relay" type error messages.
Problem may be that the bit after the @ in her
email address is different to yours.
So your after the @ is accepted by Virgin,
but not hers.

Port 110 - that'll be incoming POP3. Outgoing SMTP is usually port 25.

Get your neighbour to bring her Dell to your house and connect it using an
ethernet cable direct to your DLink router. This will eliminate any
potential problems with the wireless setup.

What SMTP settings are in her email program? How do they compare with
yours? What email address does she use and how does it compare with yours?

If she is using the Virgin SMTP server I would expect Virgin to refuse to
handle any messages that do not come from an Virgin email address. She
might expect to see the number 550 in an error message relating to the
failed transmission.

Try pinging mail.virgin.net, pop.virgin.net, and smtp.virgin.net - you will
find that today they all resolve to the same IP address. But in the future
they might not, so you should use the settings that Virgin have told you.
