I am trying to set up a Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router but am having
problems.

I can easily set up the router with my notebook, however my desktop
and older desktop cannot communicate with the router. All three are
running XP home, all three have different network cards.

I have sequenced the powering up correctly and all the cables are in
the right slots and all the lights are doing the right thing. When I
type in the router's IP address in MS Explorer, I get the usual page
as if there is nothing at that IP address. I went to the device
manager and updated both drivers in both desktops for the network
cards - did not help. I entered the router's IP address statically and
could not ping the router - got timed out.

Spent an hour or so on the phone with customer support - Live from
India - and they were no help.

This is the second new router I have had in the past 2 weeks, one from
Netgear and the Linksys - had the same problem with both, so it is not
the router. (I can communicate with the router with my laptop)

I also have no problem connecting to the internet with both desktops
and the notebook.

It does not seem possible that two different network cards would both
be bad ( I had the older desktop linked to a wired D-Link in the past)
so it looks to me like a software problem but I am stumped.

Recap:

only the notebook can recognize the ip of the router
all three computers access the internet - no problem
same thing happened with Netgear router
all three computers have different network cards
neither desktop can be made to communicate with the router even if I
enter a static address
when I ping the router using the desktops, I get ....timed out
device manager and tcp/ip have been interrogated and changed
both network cards in the desktops have the latest drivers
all three are running XP home

Do you think it is an XP issue?? I am at a loss.

Help if you can.

Keep in mind that there are three key values when you enter a static IP:

The IP address
The subnet mask
The gateway address

Once you get these right, you can focus on the DNS stuff.

You are probably better off using DHCP for address and DNS untill you get
everything working right.

you entered the routers ip statically ?? Where ?? on the desktops ?? you
cant have the routers ip on the desktop ??

do you have firewall software on the pcs ?
are you connecting via wireless or wired ?
can the desktops ping each other ?
do the desktops get dhcp from the router ?
