I've got a netgear DG834PN and i had to reinstall my system a month ago.
Since then I have been getting pregnant pauses while browsing, emailing or
anyhing to do with the net.

It doesn't seem to happen on my laptop. They symptoms are this.

I can be happily surfing - there doesn't seem to be any consistency as to
when it does it - and will click on a link, only to be told "Server not
found, try again"

If I wait a minute, it finds it next time, but if I immediately click on
refresh it can sometimes takes four attempts before it will load. And then
it is fine until the next time.

There is nothing going on in the background. The router is connected all the
time. The router settings didnt change from before the rebuild.

Can anyone explain this please?

Sounds similar to what Martin Underwood reported a while ago, also with a
Netgear router. See the thread "Intermittent loss of wireless connection" (7
July).

I took a look thanks.

My problem is with my PC, the wireless laptop works fine. Plus another PC on
the router works fine too.

I have the latest firmware on the router also.

(I have no idea where I plucked that date from. It should be 20 June.)

Ah, sorry. So the problem PC is wired to the router? What network-related
software have you installed, and have you checked for any malware?

Even though the problem is different, it might be worth running "ping -t" as
Martin Underwood did, to see if that is affected at the same time.

I have a Netgear router also but not the same model.

Try reducing the MTU (bytes) value on your router from 1500 to 1400

You shouldn't normally need to do this but I had the same symptoms you
describe and couldn't accesss MSN Messenger at all nor could I keep a
constant connection on email and news.

All is well now though.

Good look.

The time-outs/pauses have been less frequent with an MTU change, though I am
still experimenting.

Thanks for the advice.
