PASSWORD PROTECTED FOLDERS

Hi everyone, is there a way I can create a password protected folder on
Windows server 2003 for only a specific user or users. Also, suppose I don't
want administrators to access this folder, is there still a way to do this?

Many thanks to all,
Jeff

Yes, but you will need a 3rd party software to do this - encrypt the folder.

Hi

If I decide to just set up a new group and give certain users access, is it
best to create a security global group rather than a distribution group?

Thanks

Then, as an Admin, the first thing I would do is backup all the files that
are not encrypted,...delete the partition,...recreate the
partition,...format the drive,...restore the non-encrypted files back to the
drive. Then the guy who put files on my system with the intension of them
being out of my reach and control would probably be fired.

Administrators have full access by default.

You can create either one. Are you an administrator but you do not want
other administrator to see your folders/files?

Hi Jabez

Yes that is correct.

Hi

As a test, I created a folder on the server named 'Test' and created a
global security group under the name 'payroll' and added a couple of users to
this group with default user access i.e. NOT administrators.

I then added this group 'payroll' to the NTFS folder permissions, to give
the members of this group of users, access to that folder on the server.

When I logged into a PC as one of those users they couldn't access the
folder. It kept throwing up the username and password window to access that
folder on the server. The only way I could access it was to log in as an
administrator!!!

It's doing my head in

Wouldn't the Encrypted File System (EFS) overcome that? I've never used it
and have intensionally avoided it, but I've been under the understanding
that it could lock out even an administrator.

Sorry, my initial impression was that you were just a user on the LAN trying
to find a way to keep "personal secret stuff" on the LAN that you didn't
want the "powers that be" from finding out about it. We do get those kinds
of questions from time to time.
